Laura, for me reading your blog and watching the videos Dan posts on YouTube is like taking a mini vacation. In fact the terrain and climate of Laos, Thailand and Vietnam reminds me very much of that part of the Caribbean we all cruised through together on vacation a few years back. Sorry to hear about your other ankle now giving you some trouble. It sounds to me like the guy on the motorbike that ran into you might have been an off-duty cab driver. Be careful when you deal with those guys. It’s a well know fact they’re all crazy. A suggestion: Because it’s been such a household fixture for almost a hundred years now, the medicinal power of aspirin is often underrated. Although it’s only a mild painkiller it’s actually still one of the best anti-inflammatories around and is ideal for dealing with sprains. Using it to minimize the swelling will help keep you more surefooted on all the gravel roads you’ve mentioned and so reduce your chances of re-injuring it. We use to refer to southeast Asia as part of the underdeveloped world although the politically correct term is now “less developed.” But that description seemed to me ironic as I watched the clip Dan posted of Hanoi’s traffic. Although it would be accurate to call it congested, during the entire five minutes I saw only one car and one truck. Everyone else was riding bicycles which is the direction the western world will have to move in if we don’t want to eventually all choke on auto soot. For urban and short haul rural transportation bikes are ideal for a culture that has both an adult and child obesity problem. And if you get into an accident with another biker you may twist your ankle or end up with a few scrapes but you won’t be mangled beyond recognition as is tragically often the case with cars. As they come roaring on to the world economic stage, if the Chinese abandon their traditional bicycles and develop the American attitude of “one man, one car” as they seem to be doing, humanity will be committing species suicide. So in this case at least, the developed world should be following the example of what is generally considered to be the less developed world. Besides, and just as importantly, … women look great riding a bike. Looking forward to your next post.
